Hillside vineyards in the inland
in San Paolo - Rimini
There are three large areas with sufficiently homogeneous soil characteristics where there is the highest concentration of the cultivation of grapes for the production of DOC wines, these being the foothills and hillside areas of the territory. . The first area, which is the mid and high zones of Valmarecchia, has a high clay content, a sub-alkaline PH level and high levels of active lime, especially on the right bank of the Marecchia river, all of which however are compatible for the cultivation of grapevines. The amount of organic substances in the highest hillside terrain is average or low.
In the intermediate part of the hill, included in the valleys of Marano and Conca, the soil tends to be average mixture, with high lime content that is sometimes clayey, with sub-alkaline PH levels, high levels of active lime and low amounts of organic substance. Lastly, in the internal soil that is part of the highest hills of the Conca valley, there is a high percentage of loose textured soil with prevalent lime content, and in some areas - especially in the bottom of the valley, of clay components. PH levels are sub alkaline or alkaline, the content of lime generally high. The amount of organic substances is low.
As it has already been pointed out, from a winegrowing point of view, the soil yields excellent results in all these areas, and can reach high quality levels especially in mid to high hilly areas where, despite a lower yield per hectare, the wines produced present higher alcoholic and organoleptic characteristics.
