The origins of this variety are unknown. It is thought to have been introduced in Abruzzo a couple of centuries ago. Although widely spread along the Abruzzo region, Montepulciano can also be found in the bordering regions where it has achieved great importance.
The Montepulciano is a very demanding vine as regards the environment where it should be grown. In fact, it needs high temperatures for a suitable ripening. It therefore requires hot and breezy areas.
Nevertheless, its production is rather irregular.
Given ideal conditions, it produces a high quality wine- structured, with nice colour and aroma, it is the ideal complement for blending with the Sangiovese vine.
It is the main vine of the DOC Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Rosso Conero wines. Blended with Sangiovese, it produces the DOC Rosso Piceno and some DOC del Molise wines.
It is also blended with Colli di Rimini Rosso as a complementary vine.
